What on earth is pic #27?!
@Jehanne: Seems like an armadillo.
The gas mask chorus girls and band looks like something from the “Phoney War” period.
The photos are great, but I wish there was a little explaination. If they are your family photos, you probably know the story and I would love to hear it.
Am I the only one having problems loading the photos? I’ve been trying to show this amazing post to a friend for days now but I can’t get it to load.
Sorry about that BJG, and thanks for bringing it to our attention. We;ll fix it asap.
I’ll bite: what’s the provenance of these photos? The painfully precise surrealism of them strikes me as anachronistic to the costumes, but there was some interesting experimentation that went on in the early days of the genre.
WTF-44 was obviously shot during “that party” in “the room” at the Overlook Hotel, ca 1920
YES!!!!! Jesus H!
Anyone have a clue as to #40? This isn’t the first time I’ve seen the picture, but it never fails to get me with the bizarre, creepy imagery. I’m assuming it has something to do with math and science being dangerous to girls, but there’s got to be a further story…..?!
I like these, unlike the Victorian Surrealism photos, these seem like the real deal. If they are augmented by modern technology – it’s done in a way that is far more sensitive to the original material.
#42 shows the evilness of math.
(sorry, I hate math)
Jehanne and Hans Peter, the image in question (#27?) is actually a pretty famous image by Dora Maar called ‘Pere Ubu’; I’m fairly certain it is an armadillo. This collection is fantastic! And, Fred, more than a few of these pics appear to have been shot at the Overlook (#14 in particular). Yikes and wow…
overlook party 1922 what? never heard of it.
Oh right got it!
The Shining
A very good reference.
Is #31 Sarah Palin’s baby picture?
wtf 10 incredibly sinister
Number 10 is obviously (and I am sure many other people caught this, I was surprised no one had pointed it out) Krampus and probably black peter (who normally fills the same role as krampus, which makes this picture odd) kidnapping a disobedient child on Christmas.
http://www.krampus.com/ (sorry, the wikipedia article on him is sorrowfully sparse)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_peter
On second look I’d say it is two Krampii not a Krampus and a black peter.
A lot of them look like sorority and fraternity foolishness…
I was really thrilled about the #41. After a long research on google I found that… http://math.vassar.edu/about/history.html Its like a theatre play on a women math school…
A few of these are of circus and vaudeville acts and a couple seem to be of Gen Tom Thumb.
wow… i’m very intrigued by some of these and extremely disturbed at the same time ha ha. fantastic collection…
Think a couple were publicity photos of extremes in human physique. Incredibly tall/fat with the very tiny.
I think 16 is an early warning to GI’s going through training along with the standard VD films. Just joking, but I’d be reluctant to touch her.
@Jehanne – Pic #27 is a pangolin . . .
Pic #9 is a scene where the Krampus, a companion of St. Nicolaus, takes the bad children into the woods, beats them with chains, and eats them. Children would beg their parents to lot send them with the Krampus. This kid must be scared to death. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krampus.
And who did the sorority chicks cheerfully murder in the first photo? Just asking…
