    That’s what I’m talking about!

in pic #6, does one of the women on the scaffolding have a clear globe on her head? it appears that there is a reflection that is in front of her head so it isn’t just something in the background

Yes she does! Have a look at the Braniff Airlines video on this site. Explains all.

I know some of those PSA girls. That’s Debbie Roel in photo #2 and #8 (the blonde). I went to Crawford High School in San Diego with a whole host of PSA/USAir hostesses.

Thanks Charlie, I really enjoyed these, as I got older and traveled more on airlines I cme to the conclusion that hostess gals on the planes are glorified waiters. I probably still would have had a great time, but then I wouldn’t have met Van. Fate I guess

I like to call them sky waitresses! Sad thing is because they’re all unionized, these are probably the same girls still flying today! I mean when was the last time you saw a stewardess under the age of 40? The only young ones appear to be all gay guys.

  • You get a lot of PSA flights in your neck of the woods, cro? Is there any posting about any topic that any person can make on the internet without one of my fellow Americans turning it into an attack on unions and/or a living wage? Your corporate overlords thank you for your uncompensated fealty.

this is probaably the only instance where womens clothing gets less slutty over time. look at how short they’re skirts were!

    ….PSA Gives You a Lift!

Okay, forget the union attack then, when was the last time anyone had a flight attendant that was under 40? Especially on an overseas flight. I am really tired of having irritated, tired 60 year old flight attendants who are really mad about their job and who wake up each morning with a chip on their shoulder “serving” me on flights. Condescending and frustrated do not make for great flight attendants. I know, I know, the job is a lot tougher than I think. But if you hate it that much, quit and do something else… please! Maybe in this economy, that’s not so easy to do, but this is not a new issue since the downturn a couple years ago.

  • Woman over 40

Joe Joe you sound like one of the reasons these women needed a union. Has it ever occurred to you that these PEOPLE are WORKING? They are there for your safety and have a lot of responsibility, they are not for your “entertainment”. So you’d be ok with the airline being able to fire these people as soon as they hit 30 and weren’t eye candy for nitwits like yourself? Thank god for UNIONS!

I happen to be a woman and I agree with Joe. A LARGE part of their job is to attend to passengers, POLITELY!!! Umm,…did I say POLITELY?!!!!

Standard conditions of employment in those days included being let go when you turned 32. Being a flight attendant until your 60s is a recent thing, as a result of a landmark 1970s court ruling. Unionisation was the inevitable result of the pathetic paychecks behind the glamour. Unionisation means that the more senior attendants get first dibs on international flights. That’s why a lot of attendants on such flights are now over 50.

The PSA uniforms depicted here were unprofessional, eye candy for male pervs, and I am glad they are history. In those days, most air travelers were businessmen and politicians whose fares were reimbursed by their employers. So catering to the inner perve in most men paid off. Today planes are filled with children, wives and women traveling for their jobs. They don’t want to upper thigh every time they are served.

You try going to work with a wine hangover. Polishing off the heels of the wine up in the galley sometimes makes them happier or sometimes more cranky. Ya gotta admire them for getting out of bed.

  • Digital Jedi

My wife and I wouldn’t really have a problem with upper thigh. They’re just shorts, after all. Then again, not too many 60-year-olds wear shorts that don’t require knee patching…but I digest…

I live in Asia, so I actually get to see more of a hostess thing still going on. Only when I fly back to North America do I get the old bitter grandmothers who feel like it’s beyond their job description to pass out water. Travel overseas: Korea, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Qatar, South Africa, Italy, Greece…it’s all better. Best of all, overseas they are all taught to be polite.

Sorry, but the unionization back in the states is partly to blame for keeping old baggage on the plane. I personally prefer the older ladies working the counters at check-in, they know the answers to every question without having to look in a computer or calling someone else.

i just really really want that psychedelic umbrella in a couple of the pics.

  • Simultaneously fun and enlightening site on the human race in pictures. Culture, history, everything! My favourite website. Thank you so much!
