Colour film of VJ Day 1945, Honolulu, Hawaii

’65 Years Ago my Dad shot this film along Kalakaua Ave. in Waikiki, Honolulu, capturing spontaneous celebrations that broke out upon first hearing news of the Japanese surrender.’

    A very well done sound track to what I am sure was originally silent film.

    That guy doing the trick with his belly @ 0:59 in is a hoot!

    Really nice to see the troops getting to celebrate for their efforts. Very cool old film. Sadly, we cannot celebrate by dragging an enemy flag behind the car as we don’t know what flag they’re flying from one day to the next.

    Bikini’s didn’t come out until 1947. So some of this footage is not VJ day. Still, a lot of it is and shows what our parents/grandparents felt when WW2 was finally over. An end to the bloodiest war in history.

    There were 2 piece swimsuits before 1947. Looking at the film they look like awartime design going by some of the ads I’ve seen so I think the footage is probably all from VJ day.
