Love the photos! Look at how thin they all were. Guess you’d have to be to wear those clothes.
A little nostalgia trip for me has been brought on by the decorations – they’re strips of foil that’ve had milk bottle tops pressed out of them, just like the ones my father used to bring home when he worked at Unigate Dairies in the mid-’70s. I took a load of it to school one year for Christmas and the teachers loved it, the foil came in the colours of the different types of milk (gold top etc). Shiny and free.
One of THE worst times for fashion and hairstyles. Ugh!
A Guveara poster in the background of the 9th photograph hints at the troubles to come.
It was an improbally innocent time, we had not even discovered sex at the time. In other countries and other times these young people would go on to a normal life of marriages, jobs and children.
For more than a few of these young people of Belfast, the future would hold desperate street fighting, long years in prison, even death on lonely hillsides or in dirty back alleys.
The young people of differing religions who looked into each other’s eyes with the beginning of love at these parties would, in a year or two, kill each other.
“It was an improbally innocent time, we had not even discovered sex at the time.”
… Why do ppl always say this about the past? Pretty sure sex was popular back then too.
I am very grateful, judging by the patterns on wallpaper and clothing, that these snaps are in black and white.
This is such a fantastic site. THANKS!!!
