Interesting how this was published in 1963 yet Dwight D. Eisenhower is referred to as “General of the Army”, not “former President of the United States.” This fits with the official etiquette that only one person should be referred to in any way as the President, and former Presidents referred to by their previous title or office. Today, former Presidents are often referred to as “former President” and sometimes even addressed as “Mr. President.

“There’s a spot for you in the Cost Accounting department”. Ah, words to put the fire in a young man’s soul!

Doubtful that this was a 1963 ROTC advertisement, most probably before 1957. The officer’s uniform depicted is the WWII “Pinks and Greens” uniform that was worn until 1957. The Army Green uniform was adopted in 1954, but not mandatory for wear until 1957. The uniform cap for the Pinks and Green had a brown bill, the uniform cap for the Green uniform had a black bill.

This was probably well before 1963. The 48 star US flag in the parade scene was in use from 1912 through 1959.

General Joseph “Lightning Joe” Lawton Collins was Army Chief of staff from 1949 to 1953. BTW, he was the uncle of Michael Collins, Apollo 11 command module pilot.

  • Loving the way that the army can’t spell “artillery” (image 4, first frame).
