Brilliant pictures. I love the fashion of the time, in particular the trainers (sneakers, very cool !
This will always be how I picture Brooklyn in my mind. Not the gentrified mecca for hipsters and trustifarians it is today.
oh my god. I’m in love. More photos please!!!
@Jamie: I’m not from NYC or Brooklyn, but I agree with you. I will always imagine NYC as from 1970s and 80s movies before the gentrification take-over by hipster douche-bags from the Midwest.
so little of brooklyn is what you consider “gentrified” a lot of the old families are still here or were fortunate enough to sell their houses and move to staten island
The music devices have definitely changed since then, but the mens footwear has remained the same !
Wow! the suitcase-sized boomboxes and huge cameras and short shorts, knee high white socks. How quickly everything (fashionable and techie) changes. It wasn’t really THAT long ago…or was it? Great photos.
Those douche bags that “gentrified” Brooklyn weren’t from the Midwest J.Punk. They’re from down the block. Trust me, if us Midwesterner’s had moved in, it wouldn’t still be such a suck-hole.
Some white, middle class, twenty somethings with sweaty hair still dress like that in Williamsburg. But they’re trying to be ironic, I think.

Last picture is well creepy. Gay dads?
WOW dam…!! I remember some of these places (from the looks of the backgrounds), a most of them have changed or are gone now. I was born in Crown Heights and raised in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Anyone from Bushwick or I.S. 291 (Class of 1989)?
