    This is 1856, not 1910. Jones died in 1874 and this was not a posthumous publication!

    Ditto on the date. I ran across this book many years ago and was struck by the fact that, no matter what the caption said was the style, the designs screamed “Victorian.”

    I think the reason why the designs remind you of the Victorian era, RC, is because many cultures became of great interest to the Victorians. I have a book published toward the end of that time which instructs how to make various screens and fans in a Japanese style and mentions how popular such things are to the western world at that time.
