    Fantastic!

  • hippy

look at the filth those supposed “hippies” left behind. what happened to being at one with nature? it seems to me like it was an ideal based on selfishness and laziness. and to be clear, i regard myself as a hippy in spirit (at least i did before i saw that picture!)

Hey, Kids! Those are your grandparents!

  • Mike G

America was a better place before the 1960′s.

  • Dy

It looks like a big “Homeless druggie convention”. Nobody bothered to bring trash bags? It is disgusting!

    • Richard Z

Do you think people attending, say, a football game clean up their own trash after a 4-hour football game? Would you? How do you think you’d all do after 3 days camping in the mud?
Very responsible, I’m sure. You’re an inspiration to us all.

Looks like a homeless stormfront convention, almost as white as the MSNBC lineup.

  • Vicki

quite a few of these photos look like they’re of refugees after some huge storm has hit :)

These comments reflect on us, and the way we interpret the world. All I see is a bunch of people having a good time in bad weather.

Hey Jon totally agree with you and Richard 2,
I can’t believe some of these comments, some of you must lead boring do nothing different at all type of life’s, very similar to a sheep’s.
I’m so glad I’m not like you.
These photos are awesome and were took back in the day when at least we had some of our freedoms left.

  • Kevin

I wonder who got stuck cleaning up that mess?

  • Mikey

In photo 18, that rock pendulum swing is interesting.

I’ll bet the Hare Krishna in #16 became a stock analyst like Jerry Reuben.

  • Weezzerr

This was suppose to be a one day event not a three day free for all, so obviously there was no preparing for all of the trash bodily or physically….. It was a great time for those of us who attended!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Christopher Dow

The mud? It rained very hard on the second day. The trash? They expected 50,000 people and got 450,000. And by the way, there weren’t any plastic trash bags in 1969. Not enough food, not enough water, but more than enough wonderful spirit to go around. After three days, maybe the place did look like a refugee camp, but photos can’t capture the the incredible feeling that was in the air. I know because I was there.

Thanks for the comment, Mr. Dow. I’ve heard similar statements from other attendees I’ve met over the years. The conditions were at times deplorable from what I understand- situations that would today most likely result in a lawsuit were then, while not exactly welcomed, at lest met with a sense of community. It’s sad that we as a culture have lost that.

Many kids stayed to clean up at Woodstock and all the negative comments posted here are coming from people that have no clue as to what was really going on at Woodstock or with the 60′s counterculture. What’s ironic is many of you probably have Hendrix, the Beatles, the Stones, Clapton, etc. on your iPod. That music wasn’t meant for you. It was music made by freaks, for freaks. “something is happening and you don’t know what it is; do you Mr. Jones?”. Go back to the Pat Boone web site.

The owners of the property got paid handsomely for the use of their land. So it’s only fair the you do not ask the people who attend a baseball, football or any gathering to clean before they leave. Especially an outdoor event which had terrible weather.

  • Meh

Man, I bet that place smelled to high heaven by the end of it all.

  • Dave

The Stones’ free show at Altamont Speedway was seriously cooler, and it played a large part in putting a screeching end to all that hippie-dippie, kumbya crap and sent the granola-eaters back under their damp rocks. The 1960s? Yeah, I suppose of they were your day and you didn’t know any better, but the 1960s were a waste of time,

  • Aaron

I don’t think the 60′s were a waste of time, great films, great music, great cars, great fashion, great rock festivals. The 60′s from what I’ve seen was the the counter cultural wake up call the world needed. So many amazing things were accomplished in the face of so many troubles. I’ve seen footage of a pile of trash from Woodstock that was used to make a giant peace sign. I also don’t agree that the music was just for those of the 60s generation, all those artists hoped their music would have an impact for decades to come, that was one of the goals of the movement. All you have to do is listen, the whole story of change and new ideas is in the music. Culture rebellion happens every decade but in different ways. With all the bad stuff going on, how could this generation not feel optimistic about the future and explore that by turning away from their parents generation? I went through the same thing in the 90′s. you can’t stop a good idea or cultural progress.

  • Greg

If you remember the 60′s…. you really weren’t there!

  • I have to laugh at the comments, especially the guy wondering “who cleaned up all this?” If you look at history and all you have to wonder about is who cleaned up the mess, you’re officially boring and trite.
