    What are the exposure times for portraits from this era?

    Ca. 1895, exposure times in artificial light were about 15-30 minutes, I think.
    So many songbirds were endangered by this fashion that a women’s league against feathered hats was formed to end the practice.

    Such practical and functional designs.
    No wonder so many bird species were nearly wiped out.
    If they weren’t actually wiped out…
